Diabetes is a metabolic condition wherein a person is unable to regulate the amount of their blood glucose due to the body’s insufficient production of insulin. The more common form of the disease, known as type 2, is increasingly diagnosed in both children and adults and has been directly connected to obesity and sedentary lifestyles. The less common form, type 1 diabetes, is typically diagnosed in childhood, but can be diagnosed as late as adolescence or early adulthood. At Connerton Family Medicine, Dr. Ailis Marrero helps patients aged 8 and older with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes to understand their disease and effectively manage it while leading full and productive lives.

A diagnosis of type 1 diabetes cannot be avoided, as this is an autoimmune disorder. However type 2 diabetes is a diagnosis that can be avoided. Well-visits for children and adults can sometimes allow Dr. Marrero to detect pre-diabetic conditions, before the body fully develops type 2 diabetes.  In this pre-diabetic stage, Dr. Marrero and her medical team can help patients to adopt healthy lifestyle modifications with regard to diet, exercise and weight loss, possibly delaying or even preventing the disease’s impacts indefinitely.

Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease is a blanket term for a group of diseases affecting the heart that includes atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease and heart valve problems. These conditions require coordinated care with your family physician, cardiologist and other specialists depending on your diagnosis. Dr. Ailis Marrero sees patients already diagnosed with cardiovascular disease as well as patients looking to avoid a diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. Regular appointments with Dr. Marrero allow her to help monitor the progression of your health and ensure any prescribed medications are meeting your needs. She seeks to help patients control their blood pressure and cholesterol levels with dietary and lifestyle changes and when needed, medication.

If you are a heart patient living in Connerton, Land O’ Lakes, Wesley Chapel, or anywhere in the vicinity of north Tampa and you need a reliable primary care physician to keep close watch on your condition and work with your specialists, contact us at 813.803.7907 or fill out our online appointment request form here.

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a chronic disease affecting countless Americans, many of which are not even aware of their condition. Hypertension is a symptomless and dangerous condition because of the role it plays in other deadly diseases like heart disease, stroke and kidney problems. Those who neglect to attend their annual checkups may not be aware of their condition until the damage is irreversible, however with timely checkups, “pre-hypertension” may be detected and reversed.

Dr. Ailis Marrero at Connerton Family Medicine specializes in preventative healthcare to help families avoid hypertension and the illness it can cause. For those already diagnosed with high blood pressure, Dr. Marrero helps patients to successfully manage high blood pressure through medication and lifestyle adjustments. If you live in the Connerton area and have not had your blood pressure checked in more than a year or need help managing your hypertension please contact our office for an appointment.

High Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fatty substance used by the body, and there are two types of cholesterol, LDL (low density lipoprotein cholesterol) and HDL (high density lipoprotein cholesterol). A person who has “high cholesterol” typically has too high LDL and insufficient HDL. Like hypertension, high cholesterol is typically a symptomless condition. This fatty tissue accumulates in the blood and can lead to blocked arteries and cardiovascular disease. High cholesterol is typically improved with dietary changes, medication, losing excess weight and exercise.

As a family medicine physician who focuses on preventive medicine, Dr. Ailis Marrero monitors the cholesterol levels of her adult patients and works alongside them to tackle risk factors linked to high cholesterol. The most common risk factors include smoking, an unhealthy diet, being overweight and living a sedentary lifestyle.

If you are an adult in the north Tampa and Connerton areas and you have not had your blood cholesterol level checked recently, or you need help managing high cholesterol, please contact our office to set up an appointment at 813.803.7907 or fill out an appointment request form online today.
